Double birthday weekend in Boston

November 13, 2012 by findingpaola

Today is my wonderful boyfriend’s birthday! To begin the celebrations, we hopped on a bus to Boston to stay with his brother Keith and wife Anita for a weekend filled with great food and fun times. It turns out that Anita’s birthday falls one day after Tyler’s so we had all the reasons to drink bubblies and enjoy fancy meals. We were able to see Tyler’s sister and mother on the trip also, which made the weekend very special for […]

Islande, The Angel

October 11, 2012 by findingpaola

I still remember the first time we met. Her hair was pulled back into a puff. Her tattered clothing hanging off her very thin frame. She was barefoot. Her caramel complexion was stained with mud or dust. She seemed like she’d been working very hard. Our eyes met, and her mouth opened into a giant smile, showing all of her teeth.  She was an unfamiliar face in the house I grew up in. The house that I left ten years […]

À la poursuite du bonheur

October 3, 2012 by findingpaola

À la poursuite du bonheur- traslated: In the pursuit of Happiness What really is the fast track to happiness? At times, my friends ask me if I’m ever mad or sad because I guess I don’t usually display my somber moods. I assure you, as an imperfect human being, I do get upset at times just like everyone else. I just choose (wisely I hope) what things to ignore and what to spend my energy on. I noticed two articles on Marie Claire’s (UK edition) April 2012 […]

Q: How to live? – A: Don’t worry about death

August 31, 2012 by findingpaola

“How to live -or- A life of Montaigne”, by Sarah Bakewell is a fun and easy- to-read autobiography of the French author, Michel de Montaigne. The book  answers the question, “How to live?” in twenty attempts as it covers Montaigne’s life events and deepest thoughts mostly found  in his Essays. I recently posted on my facebook page that as I go along with the book, I will write my opinions and the things I’ve learned about the answers. This is […]

“You’re not special”

June 13, 2012 by findingpaola

After seeing snippets of Mr. David McCullough Jr.’s commencement speech posted on numerous sites over the past few days, I decided to read it thoroughly a number of times. I agree with everything he said. The man spoke the truth without sugar-coating anything, and I applaud him for that. Although his speech was addressing an audience of privileged, middle class, high school students, it’s clear that his views about selflessness were for anyone (no matter the social class, age, etc.) who would […]

What am I thankful for?

November 24, 2011 by findingpaola

I am thankful for love, both received and given. Health, full bellies, and smiling faces everywhere. Hard-working men and women who make a difference in everyone’s daily life. I am thankful for light and warmth. Life and every beautiful thing in it.  And finally I am thankful for my family, friends, and job. I am from Haiti, we do not celebrate Thanksgiving, but I think one of the most important things that lead to happiness is gratitude. What are you […]

It’s a beautiful life

May 5, 2011 by findingpaola

“The most important things in life aren’t things.”    I was at the gym yesterday and the song “it’s a beautiful life” started playing. I immediately started dancing and singing along while changing in the locker room. I agree, it is a beautiful life. To me, life is all about cherishing what you have while working hard towards your goals. It’s about seeing growth and progress. It’s about giving and accepting love. It’s about helping, teaching and learning. It’s about taking […]

One of the most memorable nights in NYC...

Deep breath.

June 9, 2009 by findingpaola

A few weeks ago, my mother said to me in Kreyol, “Mwen pa konnen ki sa ou t’ap fè si nou pat janm vi’n na peyi saa.” (I’m not sure what you would do if we never came to this country.) She called me while I was at work,  and we were having one of our usual mother-daughter conversations. I would ask her how she was doing,  she would respond in the same manner she always had.  Then, she would […]
