I have a great story about the color purple. When I was about eight, I had this beautiful, poofy, polka-dot dress I just loved! I would wear my hair in two or three braids, the dress, and very shiny black shoes. I always felt like a princess wearing that dress, and it was around the time I didn’t think much of myself. I would twirl in it privately, and I always imagined I was some important little lady. I’m not even sure who gave it to me, but I loved it.
Red was my favorite color, and it was something I was proud to tell people. So my mother just assumed that I wouldn’t miss the purple dress and offered it to one of my cousins who claimed that purple was her favorite color. I was so heartbroken when that dress left my wardrobe. At the time, my cousin lived in the US and I in Haiti. I just couldn’t understand what someone who lived in America, who had everything they could desire, would want with my little purple dress. The dress was gone, but I always remember it whenever I wear something purple.
This purple blouse paired with black and white leopard trousers reminded me of that story. Now, I laugh about it, but it was truly a disaster for me as a child.
