I’ve been looking for the right spot to get a Harlem t-shirt for a while. I’ve seen some on 125th on some vendors’ booths, but they didn’t really do it for me. I was looking for style, subtlety, and quality. I wanted to something I can wear with both skirts and shorts- not something that would sit in my closet, and only be worn when I was cleaning my apartment. I went to Harlem Underground on 119th and Frederick Douglas, and had so many options with Harlem t-shirts, it was hard to choose. The cotton is not thick, and the shirts are extremely soft, which is a huge bonus for me. There is nothing cheesy there, every shirt is tastefully chosen. The store is very well-organized and spacious. It’s easy to scan through the racks to get what sparks your interest. The only bad thing is that it’s so easy that you may end up with a lot more t-shirts than you intentionally went in for.
Harlem Underground carries any kind of cool t-shirt you could possibly want. Some of my favorites included “The Fist” (pictured above), Jimi Hendrix, Batman (looked vintage), Bob Marley, Micheal Jackson, and the Harlem shirt I purchased. The shirts are not really cheap, but they’re quality items. They cost as much as an Urban Outfitters shirt would, except that you’re not supporting a major corporation that doesn’t care about you, you’re supporting a small business that adds value to the Harlem neighborhood. The prices rage from $20-50 depending on the shirt. Mine cost $22, and I did cut off the sleeves because I always end up destroying t-shirts. I’m not done cutting it yet, and I will come back and show you what I’ve done.
If you can, stop by, take a look around, and show your support. Harlem t-shirts are so cool! In the meantime, I’ll keep looking for cheaper alternatives.
There are currently two locations in Harlem : 2211 Frederick Douglass Blvd. and 20 E. 125th street.
