Three black, French speaking girls from different countries set off to have some fun in Harlem one Friday night. Aissata who was raised in Paris but whose parents are from Senegal, lives in Upper East Side. She absolutely refuses to go anywhere below 110th street for true, New York City fun. She calls Harlem her home, and she can’t wait to move there. Olivia is also from Paris, originally from Burkina Faso, lives in Midtown, and decided to tag along for the ride. We were going to a fashion exhibition of a friend we met just recently at a swing dancing event in Lincoln Center.
Randal, the designer, transformed his three story home in Harlem into the ultimate fashion haven. The living room was nicely decorated with his signature pieces and other objects to go with his Egyptian/safari/barn-like theme. It was an extremely hot event, and I mean that both literally and figuratively. The models, all beautiful men of color, showcased his very interesting pieces, as they made their descent from the stairs that led into another common room. There was no air conditioning, but we were all given portable fans to cool ourselves.
We had such a fun time looking at Randal’s work. It was so impressive how he decorated everything from the entrance, to the small balcony that overlooked 152nd Street and St. Nicholas Place. We didn’t make it down to the basement, but we heard he had amazing vintage pieces on display for sale there. It was one of the most memorable private events I’ve been to in Harlem. There were so many good looking people with majestic afros there; I just couldn’t get enough of the whole thing!
