Sometimes my fiance looks up from a book or comes home, and just decides to take me out on a date. Not a “put on your tennis shoes, and let’s go get frozen yogurt and a movie” date. He wants a “let’s get all dressed up and go somewhere we need to hail a cab for to enjoy crafted cocktails and new food” date. And when it’s his idea and not mine, I get ridiculously excited! I say something as stupid as, “I thought you’d never ask!” And then I’d pull out a dress he’s never seen before and finish with, “I’ve been saving this little number just for this date!” And then he would laugh and shake his head and give me a very unreasonable time window to get ready by. Then I’d roll my eyes and start my routine because in reality, it doesn’t even take me that long to get ready. Either way, our date nights make me so happy, and it’s always cute when he goes all out and puts a three-piece suit just because.
That night, we went to The Modern for drinks. And I wasn’t really in the mood for their specialty cocktails, so I ordered one of my favorites: gin martini with three olives. I don’t really like sweet drinks, but I appreciate a good whiskey, gin, or rhum based cocktail. I really love spicy and sour drinks too. One of my favorites is the Seven Spice Sour at Momofuku or Ma Peche.
We decided we didn’t want to dine at The Modern, so we walked up to Ma Peche because we are seriously obsessed with David Chang’s cuisine. I think I can eat his pork buns, rice, short rib, or rib eye everyday in my life. But fiance is worse than me, and his obsession came way before I gave him the Momofuku book for Christmas. We feasted on variety of small plates. The funny thing about Ma Peche is that the dress code is super casual! And here we were all suited up and cocktail dressed dining of short ribs, fried rice, and pork buns. It was amazing. Date nights are always amazing.
