Paola… Lost in New York City

Contemporary Negro– Free t-shirt giveaway!

No one likes naps as much as I do. I’m not talking about delightful afternoon siestas, I’m referring to the coily/kinky hair I was blessed with. The hair that used to be criticized everyday when I was a child, and teased when I was a teenager. The hair that gets so many people frustrated and leaves so many black women over-sensitive and defensive. The hair that can be one of the most controversial topics on the planet in black culture.  The hair that requires the most tender, loving care.

I love my hair, it’s no secret. I’ve been wearing it short and natural for many, many years now. It has been much shorter, and I don’t mind it either way. I’m not one of those “holier than thou” natural women who judges everyone by what they choose to do with their hair… because after all, it’s theirs. Personally, I’ve never really been extremely focused on just growing out my afro because I think it looks beautiful short. I go as far as moisturizing it everyday, and deep-conditioning it every so often (although not enough) so I look presentable.

To me, hair is just exactly what it is…hair. I don’t spend hours or days working on it or conceal it under wigs for growth. I sometimes get giant box braids and bantu knots with extensions. I just really love afro-styles, but I appreciate all healthy hair no matter how it’s worn. I really think life is much more than the hair one carries, but it exists, so we talk about it. I also don’t judge people who treat their hair differently than mine, whether they’re relaxed, wear straight extensions, or dreadlocks. Everyone should have their own preferences no matter what people think. I just know that I appreciate a good ‘fro when I see one whether it’s extremely short, medium, giant, highlighted, curly, kinky, or colored.

When I saw this t-shirt on my friend, Avi’s website, I just had to purchase it! Avi is a graphic designer with an eccentric style. He is now based in Brooklyn New York, and he’s one of the coolest people I know. He is everything New York City stands for. Fun. Interesting. Ambitious. Creative. You name it!

Now that I’m done rambling… I have another t-shirt to giveaway (LARGE/men’s in the color white) to one lucky winner! The tee I’m wearing now is a small/men’s.

To win, answer the following questions in the comment box below:

Is hair important to you? How do you wear it? What’s your favorite hairstyle? What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire? (OK, you really don’t have to answer the last one.)

I will pick one lucky person on Saturday, September 1 randomly. U.S. residents only.  Be sure to leave an email address to be contacted if you win! You can also like my page on facebook.

If you don’t win, you can always purchase one of these shirts or other cool stuff at: http://www.contemporarynegro.com/

  1. Hair is really important to me and because I was blessed with ethnic hair or naps x) I try to keep my hair healthy and hydrated in order to wear my hair out curly/frizzy and rock my favourite hair do’s which include a style that consists of my hair being french braided (cornrows) on one side (half of my head) and plain curly on the other.. It gives my hair a faux hawk and well to answer the last question, Batman would become some sort of a mysterious bat/vampire crime fighting creature if he was bit by a vamp :s I hope he never does though!

Is hair important to you? Claro que si! Important enough that I gave her a birthday and a first and last name.
How do you wear it? Anyway I like (; from cornrows, twist, knotty, out, small, big, pulled back, mind grabbing, with twirls, with swirls, with curves, with kinky, with slides of curls, hidden into buns, elegant waves, extended hearts of braids, or with a kaleidoscopic coils. I don’t limit Indigo to barriers. I let us do our thing.
What’s your favorite hairstyle? Yikes . This is a tricky question. I am highly indecisive so I will choose any variation from braids and twist.
What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire? I would pray over Batman, he’s way too cool to be a vampire. But wait . . . aren’t vampires the actual monsters that turn into bats in the old films? Oh my, that means that Batman is a vampire? hmm . . . maybe not . Is there even a reason why Batman is named Batman… perhaps there is as we both can tell I do not know why. Maybe Batman has his name from being quick and swift like a bat. Anyway, I would pray over Batman and somehow the venom from the vampire would dissolve into nothing. So he’ll continue to be Batman the man with the awesome gadgets .

Thank you for this opportunity ! I love your name btw, how is it pronounced ?
And I apologize I do not have a facebook account to like you page.

  3. Is hair important to you?
As I was growing up I had natural hair and later, when I was an early teen, I was forced to perm it. During that period, I did a lot of weaves. Although my hair was very healthy, it would start breaking when I had regrowth so I had to continuously perm it. I did not like my hair permed, there was no volume or character, it was just straight and flat. About 4 months ago, I decided I did not want my hair permed any more! I had enough! So 5 weeks ago, I cut all my hair off and now I have beautiful shorty natural kinky-curly hair, and I love it! It’s very healthy and it’s growing fast! Hair is very important to me because (in some way) it reflects a person. Since I cut my hair, my friends always make comments like “I love your courage to accept and love your hair in its natural state. I wish I was bold enough to do that”. I love hearing that from people because I think it’s important that Black women embrace their hair and stop conforming to Society’s ideology of ‘beauty’.

    How do you wear it?
I wear my hair almost different every two days! My hair so very easy to experiment with. I try new routines of twist outs every week to see new results and recently, I have learnt how to create the short dreadlocks look. I wear my hair complete natural all the time now! Sometimes, I have mini twists, sometimes- mini braids, curly, clown out, and sometimes completely kinky! On days when I have an outiing, I still my hair with a small turban at the back, leaving some hair at front in a messy circle, it looks great!

    What’s your favorite hairstyle?
My favourite hairstyle is the Janelle Monae Mohog! It’s what I call AFROTASTIC!

What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire?
LOL!!! We need to debate about this. I think I have a cure if that happens, I don’t want to give it away though. Oh BTW, I gave Batman his powers, what ever anyone says is a lie!!!

  4. Why oooh why U.S. residents only :-) I answer anyway, just to share a little bit ok?
Is hair important to me? The answer is between yes and no. I mean, I can spend long hours making box braids with extension ( I do it on my own) and at the same time I love short hair. I cut mine almost every year, I like it short and natural. I can’t have a blog dedicated to hair only and even though I sometime read some blogs/articles about it, I find it very boring. Super exaggerated hair routine and additional extra care…not for me.
    How do you wear it?
Short :-) twists, twist out, mini-fro…
    My favorite hairstyle?
Mini-fro, Big Afro, twists, box braids…As long as it is versatile, I like it.
I like your hair just the way it is on your pics, beautiful Paola.

    • Maybe next giveway will be include international. I love your reply. I started a blog solely dedicated to hair, then I didn’t see the point because although I liked my hair healthy and pretty looking, I didn’t really want it to be the only that defined me. I have so many interests and other things I would like to share with the world! I do occasionally peak at some interesting hair blogs though. :) And thank you for the compliment!

Is hair important to you? It is and it isn’t. I mean, I stalk hair blogs and get into debates about hair ever so often, but in the end, it’s just hair…..I almost never wear my hair loose, always in a bun or under a hat (in the winter) or in yarn braids. My fav hairstyle? My bun lol….I’m a bit boring I guess but I’ve had natural hair all my life so I guess the ‘novelty’ isn’t there. I like how I look with my hair pulled back though. Casual elegance :) . If batman gets bitten by a vampire then he’d truly be a batman instead of a rich guy who runs around in a mask and cape ^_^

    1. Is hair important to you?
I think the health of my hair is whether than anything else. Ironically, health can lead to other things like growth. i personally don’t like perms because it dried my hair and broke it off. If you have permed hair and it’s health, great! If you have a healthy TWA, great! I’d be lying if i said that i wouldn’t care if my hair was shaved off because i would (lol). For me hair isn’t my identity, it’s a accessory. HA! that could totally be on a t-shirt LMAO!

    2. How do you wear it?
To be honest, i don’t do too much. I’ve tried pinned twist, Bantu knot out, mini twist, high bun (lots of high buns lol), braid outs and i recently tried finger coils. i like to wear my hair out… Just Out. i wish i was one of those girls who can whip up a style like no other, but i must have missed that “how to style natural hair, FABULOUSLY!!” seminar….

    3. whats your favorite hair style?
Although i probably won’t get them (because i like my hair to be “free”). i recently love looking a videos and pictures of dread locks. like most people may think their gloss, but i think they are absolutely beautiful and I’m not just saying this because Damien Marley is one of my many husbands inside of my head. haha. On my personally head, i do a mean braid out!

    4. what if batman got bitten by a vampire?
I think he would be on the next twilight movie. The storyline would be like Kristen’s character would cheat on Robert’s character with the Batman vampire dude. I SEE BLOCKBUSTER SMASH!

  8. literally just found your blog almost 5 minutes ago and i’m in love!
Is hair important to you? Yes hair to me is definitely important, its one of those affairs to me that i see everybody work it out and i just can’t.I love seeing people rocking their natural hairstyles but for me I don’t look good with short hair and my hair is just so stubborn that it tangles like dreads when i remove it forcing me to go back to braiding. I hate when people say perming or straightening your hair is conforming to societies form of beauty because its not, in the end its how we good we think we look in hairstyles and if that’s with straight hair so be it. I’m just one of those unlucky people with knotty tangling unruly hair but hey, its mine and i gotta love it.

How do you wear it? As a child I had dreads because my hair is really sensitive and I would cry when my mom tried to do anything to do it. I leave my hair now natural and I braid it.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Its gotta be your type of hairstyle, I wish I could be brave and wear it out but the amount of time it takes to care for natural leave-out hair is not time I have everyday. Oooh but I do love those fresh out the salon relaxed hair that makes you feel as though you’re Halle Berry fab

What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire? He won’t have to rely on his gadgets anymore and maybe he can finally get on Superman’s level lol

  9. Is hair important to you? Yes ma’am,More now than ever
How do you wear it? Ive been loc’n my hair for a year and some change. best decision i ever made
What’s your favorite hairstyle? straight down for now…plain n pretty
What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire? He could always pray about it. *shrugs*

  10. Is hair important to you? Yes! When my hair looks great, I feel great :)
How do you wear it? I love wearing it in a short natural fro or in a high pouf!
What’s your favorite hairstyle? my favorite hairstyles are the high pouf and the Janet Jackson-esque box braids! :)
